It was a brisk opening day in Mustang country. The Spartans came out a little sluggish and with first game jitters unable to score runs with the bases-loaded one on the first inning. After settling down the team played well even though they came out on the losing end. The 12-2 score doesn’t show the fact that through the fourth inning it was 4-2 with bases-loaded and an 0-2 count on the Mustang’s star player. A couple of highlights: Chey Bean flashed a good glove at shortstop, a position she was forced into due to injuries, and a good stick. Els Nelson is one of the first freshman in Spartan history to start a game and get a base hit on opening day. McKenzie Showalter, new to the program, make good contact and scored the Spartans first run of the year The Spartans are making vast improvements in attitude and skill over last year.. Last year’s opening day we were no-hit against Alan East. This year, the game was competitive.
